"A strong sense of duality is evident in Nigel's recent work. Pictorially and psychologically they simultaneously say 'Welcome' and 'Keep out!' The viewer is presented with an interested and sometimes puzzling dichotomy between enclosure and disclosure. Repeatedly, a contrast is set up between open and closed physical and psychological spaces. The viewer is teased and challenged to enter these spaces, and when accessed they prove very difficult to leave. A sense of entrapment is achieved."Ken Elias MA RCA.

About the Artist (CV Below)

The Journey of a Fine Artist

Nigel Williams, a seasoned fine artist with personal experiences that colour his process. At the age of sixty-three, he still has the passion for painting.

Nigel's artistic voyage began as an unexpected turn of fate. A former police officer, his promising career was abruptly interrupted by a life-altering accident that fractured his spine. Undeterred by adversity, Nigel found solace in the world of art.

Embracing the opportunity for reinvention, Nigel embarked on a transformative journey that led him to art college. At university, he honed his skills and talents, achieving a first-class (Honours) degree in Painting and Drawing. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a hunger for deeper understanding, he pursued further education and earned a Master's degree in Fine Art.

Over the years, Nigel's dedication extended beyond his own canvases to nurturing budding artists. For more than two decades, he shared his knowledge as an art lecturer at a college in Swansea. Guiding aspiring talents, he helped sculpt countless dreams and ignited sparks of creativity.

Nigel's artistic influence reached far beyond the classroom. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he ventured into the digital realm, becoming the visionary founder and editor of the celebrated Welsh Art Website, Artcymru.co.uk. A virtual gallery that transcended geographical boundaries, it drew over 40,000 art enthusiasts each month, basking in the brilliance of contemporary Welsh art.

His contributions extended to the very heart of the artistic community, as Nigel was a member of the Friends of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery Committee and the esteemed Josef Herman Trust. Exhibiting his own works extensively throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, the USA and Singapore.

In this pivotal year, Nigel has focussed upon rebuilding the professional career that was sidelined for many years to teach. Part of this relaunch included a number of open exhibitions and Nigel has been recognised anew. His hard work and dedication has garnered him the coveted longlisting for the esteemed Visual Artists Association Professional Artists Award in 2023. A Highly Commended award in the King Lear Prize 2023, acceptance into the open exhibition of the Royal Cambrian Academy, and exhibits with Studio Cennen in Ffair Fach near Llandeilo.

Nigel is also a published author of crime novels with his co-writer Arthur Cole. The Terry McGuire series of novels is available on Amazon and libraries. He also writes under the pen-name of Russ Geraghty. A new series of crime novels is also in the pipeline with Arthur Cole and book 1 of the Abe Quince series should be available in the Spring of 2023.

Nigel also has an Instagram and TikTok profile with lots of content (thanks to his more tech savvy daughter Ciara).

Blankets, Shawls and Other Comforts.

The poster from my solo show at Oriel Lliw in 2001.This work was a combination of figurative and surreal imagery exploring my Welsh upbringing by using the patterned shawls that were used to cwtch me as a child. It was a time of relative poverty filled with unreserved love and this work was exploring that theme.
